What is Haram in a couple?

What is Haram in a couple? Islam imposes obligations in a couple like any other religion. The rules are based on the Quran and laws to define what is Halal and Haram. In this article, let’s explore together what is Haram in a couple?

Haram in a Muslim couple: what are they?

The Muslim religion imposes obligations and a number of prohibitions, such as incest for example, like any other human society. Moreover, there is a law that governs this prohibition in the Quran, presented as follows:

“Prohibited to you are your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal aunts and maternal aunts, daughters of a brother and daughters of a sister, mothers who have breastfed you, milk sisters, mothers of your wives, stepdaughters under your guardianship and those born of women with whom you have consummated marriage; if the marriage was not consummated, there is no sin upon you; the wives of your sons born from your loins, as well as two sisters combined – except for the past. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful” (Quran IV- 23).

Sexual relations outside of marriage

This is formally haram in Islam. Indeed, violating what is lawful falls under the category of “Zina.” It is translated as “fornication,” corresponding to the terminology of Christian dogma. This refers to relations between unmarried people and not bound by a religious vow. It can also be translated as adultery. An offense punished by courts, and for those engaging in prostitution.

The Quran states that Zina: “Indeed, it is a disgrace and what a bad path,” it announces in verse 32 of surah XVII. Furthermore, it declares that this deserves “one hundred lashes.” On the other hand, the term Zina can also be translated in Arabic in the sense of ornament, embellishment, and beauty. It is sometimes given as a feminine first name.

Homosexuality

The issue of homosexuality varies greatly from region to region and from culture to culture. Concerning the Islamic religion, it is impossible not to address homosexuality. In some places, for example, there can be great tolerance, even allowing men dressed as women to host wedding ceremonies. There are “some Muslims” who claim that if there are homosexuals, it is because God has allowed it.

However, in other countries, these homosexuals risk severe prison sentences as well as any harassment related to their status as detainees. Moreover, it should be noted that the Quran addresses homosexuality only by mentioning the fate reserved for practitioners, namely: the punishment of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. They transgressed God’s laws and were punished. Thus, based on the Quran, homosexuality is haram in Islam.

Is marriage with cousins haram?

However, do you know that marriages with first cousins are not haram in Islam? In fact, the actual practice of matrimonial alliances has favored this type of endogamous marriage. This aims to preserve heritage within the family, such as land and livestock. Additionally, marriage with a first cousin prevents the dispersion of assets provided by nature.

In summary, Islam and religious authorities impose sexual morality, the prescription of marriage, a rejection of celibacy, and the rejection of homosexuality in their rules regarding couple relationships. The same goes for masturbation.
