All women are naturally beautiful. Makeup in other cultures is a way to enhance one’s beauty. However, in Islam, it is always advised to dress modestly. Since dyeing hair may be considered Haram under certain conditions, is the same true for wearing makeup? Read our article to discover the answers.
What does the Quran say about makeup?
The Quran is the basis of the Muslim religion. It does not specifically mention wearing makeup, and does not provide guidance on makeup and cosmetic practices. However, the religion encourages practitioners to opt for a modest appearance. The purpose is not to attract what is considered “excessive” attention to oneself, and especially not to boast about one’s beauty or appearance.
On the other hand, there are hadiths that mention the use of Khôl, or a powder to highlight the eyes. This is encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad himself. In fact, some hadiths also encourage both men and women to wear perfume.
Here are some hadiths supporting these statements:
Regarding the use of Khôl: According to the hadith reported by Ibn Abbas, the Prophet Muhammad said:
“Use Khôl to enhance their sparkle and make them more beautiful.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 77, Hadith 162)
Regarding the use of perfume: as reported by Aisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad:
“A man should wear perfume when going to the Friday mosque.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 13, Hadith 21)
Use of perfume for women: the Prophet Muhammad said:
“Every woman who wears perfume and passes by people who smell it is considered a fornicator.” (Sunam Abi Dawood, Book 32, Hadith 4171)
Is makeup then Haram?
Is wearing makeup on the street, at home, or during prayers prohibited? What does Islam say about these prohibitions?
On the street
As a Muslim woman, it is forbidden to go out in an inappropriate manner. A woman’s nature is always beautiful, even if some like to enhance it by wearing makeup or even getting piercings, which are Haram if done in certain parts of the body. Indeed, a woman should be discreet and stay at home as much as possible to preserve her modesty.
Makeup further enhances a woman in the eyes of men, and they risk leading them into fornication. In this case, the wearing of makeup will depend on the context in which the woman chooses to wear it.
To attract her husband’s attention
In essence, a man is attracted by what he sees. So, when his wife looks beautiful for him, she will surely receive rewards. Furthermore, if all this is enhanced with makeup to look perfect, Her Creator will reward her even more. And, all acts aiming for rewards from the Most High are counted as acts of worship, so they must be perfect.
However, even if a woman wants to satisfy her husband, she should not exceed the limits and cross forbidden lines. Therefore, she should not waste her time beautifying herself and neglecting her religious obligations.
During prayers
It all depends on the consistency of the makeup. Indeed, depending on the aspect, makeup does or does not allow ablutions. Although it can add color to the face, it can be left on. It is advisable to remove makeup before purification. On the other hand, Khôl is good for eye health. It is recommended to apply it even for men.
In summary, in order to please her man, it is halal to wear makeup. However, a woman should not spend too much time on it to avoid neglecting her duty.
